Organisations and associations promoting alternatives to animal use in education

Worldwide, there are several organisations and individuals promoting humane education and the use of alternative methods. These are ready to advise, help or support students objecting animal experiments in the class and campaigners or teachers working on replacement of invasive use of animals in education.

Animalearn is a specialised branch of organisation AAVS (American Anti-Vivisection Society), whose activity achieved significant results, particularly in the U.S. Animalearn has, similarly as InterNICHE, alternatives loan system, which are available for students and teachers.

AVAR (Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights) is American organisation, which administers comprehensive internet database of alternatives for replacing of animal use in all levels of education. AVAR publishes two magazines Alternatives and Directions. These are available on their website. Veterinary students can also join discussion email list.

ESEC (Ethical Science and Education Coalition) is a branch of american organisation NEAVS engaged in alternatives in lower education in particular. However it also deals with university education.

EURCA (European Resource Centre for Alternatives in Higher Education) is joint project of universities in Utrecht and Edinburgh. Aim of the organisation is to improve the information supply about accessible alternatives in higher education, and to provide mechanism for their effective dissemination. One way is a database of the most frequently used alternatives with reviews from the users.

HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) is one of the most important organisations for animal protection in the U.S. and it also deals with the issue of animal use in education. On their website you can find, among others, text of a book by distinguished expert on educational alternatives Dr. Jonathan Balcombe: The Use of Animals in Higher Education: Problems, Alternatives, and Recommendations.

InterNICHE (International Network for Humane Education) is on of the biggest organisations which promotes principles of humane education, where animal experiments are being replaced by alternative methods. InterNICHE, which started in 1988 as EuroNICHE, has now over 30 national contacts around the world. The network created awarded videofilm Alternatives in Education – new approaches for a new millenium, where teachers of various specialisations demonstrate alternatives, which they use in their courses. The film is now available in nearly 20 languages. In February 2003 the network published the 2nd edition of a book about alternatives in education - From Guiea Pig to Computer Mouse, where over 500 products are described in details. InterNICHE has its own collection of alternative methods (software, models, simulators, publications), which are provided for free within Alternatives Loan System.
